Benefits to the community

The Gold Coast Rapid Transit project will provide local residents with far more than a world-class public transport network.
Light rail has a proven track record for revitalising cities by connecting people and places, and consequently attracting investment.

Stage One of the Gold Coast Rapid Transit system will generate a number of social, environmental and economic benefits for the city including:

  • reducing local greenhouse gas emission by 114 000 tonnes over the first 10 years of operation
  • reducing the number of private vehicle trips by up to 10 per cent
  • generating more than 6300 direct and indirect jobs
  • providing a frequent, affordable and reliable alternative to car travel
  • contributing to a fully integrated public transport system for the Gold Coast.

Modelling suggests that the project could potentially increase public transport mode share from four per cent to seven per cent by 2026.
